On June 28, 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo triggered the chain of events that led to World War I — and, in a profound twist of history, to the explosive development of military aviation. The war that began that summer turned a fragile novelty into a weapon that would define the 20th century.
In August 1914, the airplane was barely a decade old. Military aircraft were used primarily for reconnaissance — fragile, slow biplanes carrying an observer with binoculars and a notebook. Nobody had fired a weapon from an aircraft in anger.
Within four years, everything had changed. Fighters, bombers, ground attack aircraft, and maritime patrol planes existed in their thousands. Aerial photography had transformed intelligence gathering. Strategic bombing had been attempted. Air-to-air combat had evolved from pistol shots between wary pilots to coordinated squadron tactics using purpose-built fighter aircraft.
The aces of WWI — Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron), Eddie Rickenbacker, René Fonck, Albert Ball — became the first international aviation celebrities. Their deeds, magnified by wartime propaganda, created the romantic image of the lone fighter pilot that still resonates in aviation culture today.
