On May 14, 1973, NASA launched Skylab, America's first space station, atop a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center. For aviators and aerospace enthusiasts, Skylab represents the ultimate extension of the aviation spirit: pushing further, higher, and longer than ever before.
Skylab was massive — 170 feet long and weighing nearly 200,000 pounds. It hosted three crews of astronauts over 171 days of occupied time, conducting groundbreaking scientific experiments in solar astronomy, Earth resources, and the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body.
Every astronaut who lived aboard Skylab was, at their core, an aviator. They were test pilots, military fliers, and trained aviators who had worked their way up through the ranks to reach the pinnacle of aerospace achievement. The skills they learned in the cockpit — situational awareness, calm under pressure, precision — served them well in orbit.
Skylab fell back to Earth in July 1979, scattering debris across Western Australia. But its legacy lives on in everything from the International Space Station to the commercial space program.
