May 26, 1956: The U.S. Navy Test Pilot School Opens — Where Legends Are Made

The United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) at Patuxent River, Maryland is one of the most prestigious aviation institutions in the world. May marks key milestones in its history, as it has produced some of the greatest aviators, astronauts, and aviation leaders in history.

Test pilots are the tip of the aviation spear. They fly aircraft that have never been flown before, push performance envelopes, and provide the data that transforms experimental designs into production aircraft. They are simultaneously the best pilots in the world and highly analytical engineers capable of documenting precisely what an aircraft does — and what it should do differently.

Graduates of USNTPS include Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Pete Conrad, Jim Lovell, Alan Shepard, and dozens of other astronauts. They also include legendary Navy aviators who went on to command carriers, lead squadrons, and shape American naval aviation for generations.

The school's motto — "Ad Inexplorata" (Toward the Unexplored) — captures the spirit of test aviation. Every flight is an experiment. Every data point advances knowledge. Every risk is calculated, but risk is never absent.

Test pilots push the edge so everyone else can fly safely. At Cleared4Tees, we build tees for people who appreciate what it takes.
